We gave it a try, but the players were terribly disappointed, when they saw just what the few funnel survivors were going to turn into. Turns out that Rovers are incredibly watered-down Thieves, Shaman are pathetic and missing a bunch of content, anyone with mutations can end up getting nothing but defects and cosmetic changes (making them actually WEAKER than they were at zero level, aside from HP), and lucky players can create superheroes that are tougher than the rest of the group, combined (one of ours ended up with size-changing, mental shield, illusion generation, and passive absorption, that a lucky mutation check turned into an effective immunity to all kinetic attacks). Once the characters were leveled up to 1, nobody actually wanted to play, since the effective power and utility levels of the various characters were all over the map and so utterly unfair. And nobody wanted to make more characters, knowing that even after they survived the funnel, this would be their "reward." It was really that bad of an experience. Not impressed.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07007566828770764974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-392427526916288536.post-4225017530621387202020-05-27T14:20:57.933-07:002020-05-27T14:20:57.933-07:00Thanks for this review! I, too, was a bit surprised at how 'lite' it seems. 1e Gamma World had all of the high tech items and robots and a few touches on trade, barter, etc. TME core book has a fairly extensive set of natural hazards and cybernetics, and feels more fully realised than MCC. Also, like most retroclone things, the tendency to hand players a Type, with no real means of customising them beyond 'make it your own' philosophy jarred me, but, it is not Basic Fantasy RPG with loads of optional modifications, but is a traditional 'Basic' RPG. I do find on my first read through, that it feels lighter than DCC.Timeshadowshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09952601433965644275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-392427526916288536.post-70439451080120858472017-06-26T13:49:47.944-07:002017-06-26T13:49:47.944-07:00I think it'd come down to the adventure - whic...I think it'd come down to the adventure - which, admittedly, is something the MCC book doesn't give you much help with. There's no reason why a manimal, a plantient, and a mutant going to look for lost technology in an old bunker should feel any more incoherent than an elf, a dwarf, and a wizard going to look for magic items in an old castle - hell, they're effectively the same story - but if the bunker is just full of lolrandom nonsense rather than something which has its own internal logic then, yeah, I can see it all feeling a bit unsatisfying and pointless...Joseph Manolahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05387275537008858939noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-392427526916288536.post-31789000698633158422017-06-26T13:11:51.503-07:002017-06-26T13:11:51.503-07:00I played in a funnel of MCC the other day. I had a good time but I can't say I enjoyed it as much as DCC.
A big part of that might be because our DCC group has a couple years into it at this point, but the MCC game (same GM) felt a bit TOO random... but it did remind me of the kitchen sink games of Gamma World I ran long ago.
While DCC has no inherent setting either it still feels more grounded somehow... but MCC just felt like a big jumble of stuff with no rhyme or reason... and if EVERYTHING is weird, nothing is.
Maybe that's just the GM's presentation though... or maybe I'd grown out of that sort of thing.
I think I'd want to start a bit more 'straight'... ala original Fallout, and then let the weirdness build.Timmy Crabcakeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14737954661234574830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-392427526916288536.post-7824207473298921422017-06-26T07:30:58.043-07:002017-06-26T07:30:58.043-07:00Thanks - I didn't realise you'd pdf'd ...Thanks - I didn't realise you'd pdf'd all the Planet Psychon stuff together!
